The construction site in Moordrecht is a serious logistical challenge. The Layers complex under construction with 54 units consists of three buildings in a triangle. The future inner garden is during the construction both storage space for all the building material and the place from which work must be done. So fitting and measuring. Difficult? Not for De Vries and Verburg, which has the motto “building on character.”
Jan van Wingerden is site manager at this construction company from Stolwijk that with 240 employees, an order portfolio of €680 million euros and an annual turnover of more than €370 million may be called a solid player. The company has been building business buildings, offices, schools and homes for more than 40 years. Since 2025, Layers also belongs to their clients. Besides in Moordrecht, the men and women of De Vries and Verburg will also get to work for Layers in Capelle aan den IJssel.
With more than 16 years of experience as a site manager, you may now call Jan seasoned in the construction world. With the eyes of a connoisseur he notes that Layers has “a completely unique style” for all their buildings, and as a builder he can appreciate that: “For us it is nice that certain starting points are always the same. Layers applies a clear structural vision as a basis. With that you have a strong concept, which in practice means that you can also build faster.” Of “production work” there is no question, Jan quickly adds: “We have a few different variants. Nevertheless every unit remains custom work for us, and we assess and finish every unit individually.”
That Layers asks its contractors to be involved and show commitment fits seamlessly with the working method of Jan and his colleagues. “The cooperation with all parties is experienced by us as very positive. There is an open attitude and there is good contact among each other with both the client and the project supervisor. Among other things, with software programs we keep reports, complete with photos and checklists. There is fixed weekly consultation and we walk around the construction site daily. In this way we keep each other sharp and together we monitor the quality and the progress.”

De Vries en Verburg carries out an ambitious plan for environmentally conscious entrepreneurship. In this way the vehicle fleet and building material are being electrified at a high pace and extensive programs are running to reduce CO2 emissions. Handling the environment carefully can also be found in the Layers projects they work on. Jan: “The materials that are used for these Layers units are mainly sustainable materials, which can be reused well in the future. Think especially of concrete, steel structures and sandwich panels.”
Jan goes to work with pleasure every day and sees it as his biggest challenge to realize things on time and to make sure that everything runs flawlessly. With the extra reward that his work is clearly visible: “If you have been allowed to build a beautiful building with appearance and in a beautiful location, then yes, I can look back on that with pride.”
